Google Apologizes for AI Image-Generator's 'Overcompensation' in Generating Racally Diverse Nazis
Google has temporarily halted its Gemini chatbot's image generation capabilities due to "inaccuracies" in the depiction of people, particularly those of color. The tool, which was launched three weeks ago, was built upon an earlier Google research project called Imagen 2. However, the creators of Imagen warned in a 2022 technical paper that generative AI tools could be used for harassment or spreading misinformation, raising concerns about social and cultural exclusion and bias. Google's decision not to release a public demo of Imagen or its underlying code was influenced by these considerations. The pressure to publicly release generative AI products has increased due to a competitive race between tech companies vying to capitalize on interest in the emerging technology sparked by OpenAI's chatbot ChatGPT.
Meanwhile, Microsoft had to adjust its own approach to generative AI, and Google apologized for "inaccuracies in some historical image generation depictions" with its Gemini AI tool. The tool has generated a wide range of people, but it is missing the mark in some historical depictions. The controversy surrounding Gemini has been fueled primarily by right-wing figures attacking a tech company perceived as liberal. A former Google employee demonstrated that it is "embarrassingly hard to get Google Gemini to acknowledge that white people exist," with AI-generated people of color as results for queries such as "generate a picture of a Swedish woman" or "generate a picture of an American woman."
Some critics of Gemini defended its core goals while noting that it is good to portray diversity in certain cases. Gemini appears to be simply refusing some image generation tasks, such as generating images of Vikings or German soldiers. Google's AI chatbot also gave unclear answers to questions about sensitive topics, prompting criticism from Fox News Digital. The chatbot's answers were seen as "appalling and inappropriate."
