Apple's In-House Wi-Fi Chips: A Dream Delayed?
Apple is reportedly planning to launch its own custom Wi-Fi chips in 2025, but there are technical limitations and financial impacts on suppliers such as Broadcom. Apple has invested heavily in developing custom 5G and Wi-Fi chips, but the exact amount has not been disclosed. However, the company is facing challenges in developing custom Wi-Fi chips and there are rumors that it has abandoned development altogether. Additionally, Qualcomm and Broadcom have patented technologies that could be challenged in court if Apple tries to reduce its dependence on them. Integrating all of these components onto a single die can improve efficiency and conserve space inside of Apple's devices, but this plan will take years to complete. The company wants to have control over the components used in its products, particularly the iPhone, and has struggled to design its own 5G modems that can match the performance of those bought from Qualcomm. Apple acquired Intel's modem business in an attempt to gain a head start in developing its own modems, but there are reports of Apple wanting to use its own Wi-Fi chips, which may not be viable in the short term due to a lack of confidence and resources. It may be more cost-effective for Apple to buy Wi-Fi chips externally rather than investing in developing its own chips.
